Check out this stunning nighttime aerial photography of the industrial greenhouses here in the Netherlands by Munich-based photographer Tom Hegen. A bit better than the images I shot from a plane 4 years ago!

I certainly appreciate the need for advanced food production. But it is frustrating that these greenhouses don’t invest in nighttime shading systems or directional LED lighting to eliminate all that spill light flooding into the sky. First, they are just throwing away money and wasting energy. But second, because my two boys have never once seen the Milky Way growing up here in Amsterdam. The air is simply too humid and between Schiphol and these industrial greenhouses, there is just massive light pollution. On a “good night” we might be able to see literally only a dozen stars, maybe a planet if really bright.
