LED screens and compound curves

Compound curves: The Final Frontier?

Over the past couple years I’ve noticed several Chinese suppliers of direct-view LED panels offering some wild options for compound curved screen surfaces (i.e. a curve that bends in two planes, such as a sphere or dome or conical section).

Once example is Meiyad, a company that routinely posts some interesting LED screens in various ruled-curve and compound-curved formats.

And check out this LED video dome fabricated by British integrator Elport Digital. I could readily see domes like this being used for mini-versions of virtual set productions like what ILM used on the Mandalorian.

They must also do outer spheres – I include this pict to show how challenging it must be to conform an orthogonal pixel grid to a compound curve.
