It is really quite sad how fast Hong Kong and Kowloon are loosing their iconic and fabulous neon signage. Even from when I first visited in 2006 to when I visited earlier this year, the change was striking. The luminous wonderlands of streets like Nathan Road have really lost something special; the vibrant neon sculptures (many defying gravity on insane wire suspensions over the middle of the streets) have been replaced but far more subdued and frankly, boring LED architectural lighting, billboard lighting, and media screens. The urban environment has lost its magic, its intense nighttime energy.
Check out this delightful site that chronicles Hong Kong and Kowloon’s slowly dying tradition. They’ve also partnered with Google on a “Google Arts and Culture” site. So many cool images…
