As part of our Philips Luminous Patterns development efforts, Eline Slingerland developed virtual models of our products using the Unreal Engine as part of her internship at Philips Research. Unreal is normally a game development engine for serious Xbox and Playstation games – though here we were using it as a possible sales tool to inspire designers and help them quickly choose what pattern and light effect style they desire.
My firm belief is that as BIM and parametric design techniques become ever-more popular in architectural design processes, lighting must evolve and embrace the new work flows of architects and interior designers. This sort of live visualization/configuration becomes key.
And oh yes – it works beautifully with VR goggles, too…
