The technologies exist today to transform architectural surfaces into portals to the digital world, complete with digital architectural “avatars”. These hyper-intelligent avatars will most likely not be anthropomorphic. They will more resemble a “presence in the light”, an ephemeral being that surrounds you in a beautiful way. This will radically change our conception both of architectural placemaking and “digital interfaces”. The dumb lumps of concrete and sticks of steel that surround us will transform into a living presence that enhances our lives in countless ways.
VR, AR or XR? None of the above.
We will simply experience the digital and physical worlds as a seamless fusion of Experience. There will be no division in Reality.
I guess we will have to call this “presence in the light” an “artificial intelligence”, but that is such a harsh and loaded term. This “presence in the light” will be more of a lifestyle companion to you, an abstraction of physical place, of data, of emotion, of memory, of your past, present and future life. It will help you with your daily tasks but also help you like a friend would when you’re feeling down or when it is time to celebrate the joys of life.
Our architectural spaces are the fabric of our lives, wrapping us and guiding us and setting the stage for our existence.
