In thinking about how Apple achieves its unique hidden indicator lights (like the video above), I started surfing the web and found Potomac Laser.  Potomac offers a range of micro-milling and cutting services, but they have a blog post specifically showing examples of using micro-holes for concealed backlighting applications in solid surfaces.

Interesting – lots of application for this in architectural surfaces and product design.
